Pond Cypress

Introduction

Pond Cypress is a narrow version of the more familiar Bald Cypress. Is is a deciduous conifer capable of reaching 80 feet tall with a narrow habit of 15 foot spread. The branches arise at right angles to the main trunk, creating a very symmetrical form. The needles are held tight to the branchet, giving a kind of rope-like effect, not as soft a look as the Bald Cypress. Pond Cypress is the last tree to leaf out with bright green needles appearing in late April. In October, the needles turn a coppery-orange.

Use and Management

In a large landscape or park, the narrow, ascending form of the Pond Cypress would make a delightful plant to mass at the edge of water. The trees should be arranged informally with gaps in the planting to create the illusion of a natural planting. The tall stately form of the tree also makes it suitable for use as a single specimen.

Pond Cypress has no pest problems, but bagworms and spider mites could attack the tree if conditions were right.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, or 45 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
