Introduction

Nellie R Stevens is a broad pyramidal tree that can reach 30 to 40 feet tall, though more commonly grows to 15 to 25 foot range. It is tolerant to heavy clay soils and can withstand drought. It performs best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Give it a location with the best drainage available as consistently wet site can damage it roots.

Use and Management

Nellie Stevens has typical holly foliage that is glossy, deep green and remains densely beautiful year-round. It is a prolific producer of bright red berries and has the advantage of not requiring a male tree to produce fruit. The red clusters last until late February or early March, attracts birds.

Nellie R Stevens can be used singly or in mass plantings. If used as a specimen, specify the single trunk, tree form. This will give the option of removing the lower limbs so the trunk shows. If used in a mass or privacy screen, the multi-stem, bush form is a better choice.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, or 45 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
