Savannah Holly

Introduction

The Savannah Holly is grown a large shrub or small tree depending on how it is pruned. It is a hybrid cultivar famous for its large crop of bright red berries during the winter months. It has a rough pyramid shape and attractive light bark.

Use and Management

Savannah Holly is a fast growing plant making attractive hedges and screens in just a matter of a few years. It is a good street tree and is often used in urban areas. Use as a specimen plant or as background for other shrubs, or to create small groves. Due to the heavy set of berries, the leaves may sometimes turn yellowish indicating a need for additional fertilizer. The berries attract birds in late winter.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, or 45 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
