Desert Willow

Introduction

The Desert Willow is a large deciduous shrub or small tree reaching a height and width of 20 feet, with branches that hang down giving it a willow-like appearance. It is not a true willow but rather a member of the bignonia family. The leaves usually drop by mid-December and re-emerge by April or May. The sculptured branching pattern adds interest during the bare stage, while allowing the winter sun to shine through. The fragrant, orchid-like blossoms range in color from white to pink to burgundy.

Use and Management

Use as a specimen or as an accent plant.

Leaf cutter ants and caterpillars are the only two insects that cause problems for Desert Willows. Treat ants with Amdro or other insecticides and remove caterpillars by hand.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, or 45 gal containers
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
