Marshall Seedless Ash

Introduction

This somewhat irregularly-shaped tree when young, becomes an oval with age. Green Ash will reach a height of 50 feet with a spread of 40 feet. The glossy dark green foliage will turn yellow in the fall, but color is often muted in the south. This cultivar was supposed to be seedless but there are female trees that do set seed. The seeds are considered messy. This fast growing tree will adapt to many different landscape conditions and can grow on wet to dry sites. There is evidence that Marshall Seedless Ash has weak wood and is susceptible to crotch breakage in high winds, heavy rains and ice storms. Many cities have overplanted the tree and due to breakage and disease, do not recommend this tree for planting.

Use and Management

Green Ash requires regular pruning when it is young to develop a nice central trunk. It adapts quite well to city street plantings. However, use sparingly when recommending this tree due to the susceptibility to potential disease and insect problems.

Planting

• Typically planted in 10, 15, 30, or 45 gal containers.
• B&B trees are specified in height (6’ – 8’ ht, etc) or by caliper (3” cal., etc)
• Container trees can be double the price of B&B trees
• Plant container trees in late summer, if price allows
• Plant B&B trees if they were dug and cured in the winter months
